| 'Laghu
the Clever Crow' |
| A
tale by Granny Geeta |
|
 |
Summary |
|
'Laghu
the Clever Crow' tells the story of Laghu, an unattractive
but very intelligent crow, and how he saves a flock
of doves from being captured by a hunter. This
simple tale is the first book in the 'Granny Geeta
Series' and highlights that things should not be judged
on how they appear. The book has been thoughtfully
written and beautifully illustrated and encourages
a universal value.

| Background |
|
The
story has been taken from a collection of animal fables
written in Sanskrit called the 'Panchatantra'. Scholars
believe this text was composed in the 3rd century BCE by
the Indian Sage Vishnu Sharma, however the stories probably
originate from before this time and have been passed down
through generations by storytellers. The story of Laghu
and the doves can also be seen in fables from Persia (Kalileh
o Demneh) and Arabia (Kalilah wa Dimnah), and are similar
to Buddhist tales from Tibet.

| The
Granny Geeta Series |
|
For
hundreds of years, grandmothers have been the primary storytellers
in families of the Indian Subcontinent. Using their intuition
they retell old tales and fables, adding humour, emotion
and excitement. Granny Geeta is a fictional character who
embodies all the qualities of a good Indian storytelling
grandmother!
